In Bogura, a violent protest broke out following the assault of two leaders from the Motor Workers’ Union. The protest led to widespread vandalism and arson on Station Road, halting transportation across districts.
On Wednesday morning, workers took to the streets in protest after the assault of two union leaders, Anwar Hossain Rana and Hazrat Ali, in Bogura’s Station Road area. The incident occurred when the duo tried to mediate a dispute between coconut vendors and CNG drivers. During the altercation, one of the victims was struck with a sharp weapon, while the other was severely beaten. Both are currently receiving medical treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
In response, enraged workers blocked local roads, disrupting both internal and inter-district transportation. CNG vehicles were forced to stop, and passengers were let off. However, buses from other districts, including Dhaka, continued operating.
By around 10:45 AM, several shops on Station Road were attacked, looted, and set on fire by the protesting workers. Riot control troops from the army arrived on the scene to restore order, and fire service personnel quickly extinguished the flames.
Later, union leaders gathered in front of the Motor Workers’ Union office, where they addressed the crowd. Among those speaking were Abdul Hamid Mitul, President of the Motor Workers’ Union, Russell Mondal, President of the Truck Drivers’ Union, and Mintu Khan, the General Secretary. They demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers, warning that the strike would continue until justice was served. They also expressed readiness for negotiations but insisted on a resolution before resuming operations.
This protest stems from a violent confrontation that occurred on Tuesday at around 5 PM near Mitali Pump in Station Road. The altercation arose between CNG drivers and coconut vendors, during which the two union leaders intervened, resulting in their injuries.
Liberty News’ local correspondent states that Bogura’s police chief, SM Mainuddin, stated that the situation has since been brought under control, thanks to the intervention of transportation owners and union leaders.
