Salwan Momika, the Iraqi refugee who sparked outrage across the Muslim world by burning multiple copies of the Quran in 2023, was shot dead in Stockholm on January 29, 2025.

Salwan Momika, 38, was killed in an apartment in Stockholm on Wednesday evening, according to BBC reports. Swedish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with police confirming the arrest of a suspect for questioning.

Momika gained international notoriety in 2023 when he publicly burned several copies of the Quran as part of protests against Islam, first outside a mosque in Stockholm and then outside the Iraqi embassy. The acts were allowed by Swedish police under the country’s freedom of speech laws but sparked widespread outrage and condemnation in the Muslim world.

In August 2023, a Swedish prosecutor charged Momika and another individual involved in the Quran-burning incidents with “incitement to racial hatred,” accusing them of fostering an anti-Muslim movement.

Liberty News’ international correspondent reports that the killing of Momika has raised questions and concerns, and the investigation is ongoing as Swedish authorities work to determine the motive behind the murder.
