People across Bangladesh are commemorating the 84th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate poet and philosopher fondly known as the Bishwakobi or “World Poet.”

While Tagore passed away on 7 August 1941 according to the Gregorian calendar, the day is traditionally observed on 22 Srabon in the Bengali calendar, which falls this year on Wednesday (August 7).

To honour his legacy, a range of cultural programmes, musical tributes, and discussions are being held across the country by government and private organisations alike.

Renowned cultural institution Chhayanaut will host a special programme at its Dhanmondi auditorium at 7 PM on Wednesday. Bangla Academy is set to hold a seminar and cultural event on Thursday at 4 PM at the Kobi Shamsur Rahman Seminar Room.

State-run and private TV channels including Bangladesh Television (BTV) will air special broadcasts reflecting on Tagore’s immense contributions to literature, music, and philosophy.

Born on 7 May 1861 (25 Baishakh 1268 BS) in Jorasanko, Kolkata, Tagore was a prodigious writer, poet, composer, and thinker. He composed over 2,000 songs, now known as Rabindra Sangeet, and authored eight novels, 84 short stories, hundreds of poems, and numerous plays and essays.

In 1913, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for his collection Gitanjali (Song Offerings).

Tagore also founded Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan in 1921 to promote cross-cultural learning rooted in Indian traditions.

His legacy remains deeply woven into the identity of the subcontinent—two of his compositions became national anthems: Amar Shonar Bangla for Bangladesh and Jana Gana Mana for India.
