Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to regional healthcare cooperation, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced that the under-construction 1,000-bed hospital in Rangpur will remain open to patients from Nepal and Bhutan.
Dr. Yunus made the remarks on Monday while attending an event hosted by the Nepal Embassy in Dhaka. During a courtesy meeting with Indira Rana, Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives, the Chief Adviser emphasized regional solidarity in healthcare and development.
“We believe in regional health security and shared prosperity,” said Dr. Yunus. “Our hospital in Rangpur will welcome patients from Nepal and Bhutan.”
He underscored the importance of strengthening regional cooperation through joint infrastructure and energy initiatives. “Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and India’s seven northeastern states should pursue an integrated economic plan. Collective action will yield greater benefits than isolated efforts,” he stated.
One key topic of discussion was hydropower cooperation between Bangladesh and Nepal. The two leaders highlighted the significance of the tripartite electricity agreement signed in October, which enables Bangladesh to import 40 megawatts of hydropower from Nepal using India’s power grid. Both sides expressed interest in expanding such energy projects.
Deputy Speaker Indira Rana expressed Nepal’s willingness to deepen bilateral ties across all sectors. “Our parliamentarians are eager to work closely with the Bangladesh government. We are committed to strengthening economic partnerships and enhancing people-to-people relations,” she said.
Referring to the approximately 2,700 Nepali students currently studying in Bangladesh—primarily in medical colleges—Rana praised Bangladesh’s education system and called for increased academic exchanges and cooperation.
The two parties also discussed enhancing infrastructural connectivity. Dr. Yunus noted that improved direct road links with Nepal would reduce trade costs and facilitate easier movement of goods and people.
The meeting was also attended by Ghanashyam Bhandari, Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh; Lamia Morshed, Principal Coordinator for SDG Affairs at the Chief Adviser’s Office; and Israt Jahan, Director General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
