Seasonal traders and individual sellers across Dhaka have voiced dissatisfaction over the disappointing prices of sacrificial animal hides, as demand slumps and buyers offer far below expectations during this Eid-ul-Azha season.
Starting from Eid day afternoon, seasonal traders began collecting hides from areas such as Mohammadpur, Science Laboratory, Gulshan-2, and Posta in Old Dhaka. However, as in previous years, they remain frustrated by the lower-than-expected prices.
Sellers also echoed similar grievances, saying they are not receiving fair prices despite the high demand. Cowhides are being sold between Tk 600 and Tk 750 depending on quality, while there is minimal interest in goat skins.
On Saturday evening, at the Gulshan-2 intersection, representatives from various orphanages were seen unloading rawhides from vans but refrained from selling due to the low offers.
Kobir, who brought 20 cowhides to the market, said, “I bought a large cowhide for Tk 800, but buyers are offering only Tk 700. How can I sell at a loss?”
At Science Laboratory, seasonal trader Zafar Ahmed brought 15 hides for sale. “I collected these hides from donors at Tk 700 to Tk 800 each, but no warehouse or tannery is willing to offer more than Tk 750. I had no choice but to sell at that price,” he stated.
Sheikh Babul, another trader from Mohammadpur Town Hall area, shared that he purchased over 60 hides, each costing him an average of Tk 700.
Another trader, Babu, said he had 1,000 hides yet to be sold. “The highest offer so far is Tk 700 per hide. Last year, I sold them at Tk 900 to Tk 1,000. This year, I’m facing massive losses,” he lamented.
Warehouse owners typically collect rawhides, treat them with salt, and store them before selling to tanneries. This year, tanneries in Dhaka are purchasing salted cowhide at Tk 60 to Tk 65 per square foot, a slight increase from last year’s Tk 55 to Tk 60. Outside Dhaka, the rate is Tk 55 to Tk 60, compared to Tk 50 to Tk 55 last year.
For salted goat hides, tanneries are paying Tk 22 to Tk 27 per square foot this year, up from Tk 20 to Tk 25. The price of sheepskin has also increased slightly to Tk 20–22 per square foot, from last year’s Tk 18–20.
Despite the marginal rise in per-square-foot prices, seasonal traders argue that the overall profit remains bleak due to high acquisition costs and weak market response.
