A Dhaka court has sentenced Sheikh Rehana, sister of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to seven years’ imprisonment, and her daughter, British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, to two years, in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of fraud in the allocation of plots under the Purbachal New Town Project.
The verdict was delivered on Monday, by Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4. In the same case, Sheikh Hasina and another 15 accused were each sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and fined Tk100,000.
It may be recalled that, following a death sentence in a crimes-against-humanity case, Sheikh Hasina was handed a combined 21 years’ imprisonment on 27 November in three separate cases related to fraudulent plot allocation.
In addition, in two separate cases, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, were each sentenced to five years in prison. Both remain absconding in these cases.
