Anwarul Islam Nayeem, widely known as the 10-year-old “fire hero” who assisted firefighters during the devastating FR Tower blaze in Banani on March 28, 2019, has now lost his own home to a fire in Dhaka’s Korail slum.

The fire broke out in Korail on Tuesday (25 November) shortly after 5 PM. By the time 11 fire service units reached the spot around 5:30 PM, Nayeem’s house—like many others—had already turned to ashes.

Despite her desperate attempts, Nayeem’s mother, Mosammat Nazma Begum, could not save their home. As a result, the mother and son spent the night under the open sky, with nowhere else to go.

Now a tenth-grade student in the business studies group at Pathshala Korail School, Nayeem works part-time as a personal assistant to support his family alongside his studies.

Speaking about the tragedy, the young Nayeem said, “When I helped put out the Banani fire, I did it without expecting anything in return. I just wanted to do something good for people—that gives me peace. But today, my own house caught fire. I couldn’t save it. By the time I came back from work, everything was gone.”

Nayeem appealed to the government to compensate the victims of the fire in the slum. He also called upon wealthy individuals in society to come forward and support those who have been left homeless.
