Additional IGP Md Rezaul Karim assumed charge as the chief of the Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) on Thursday morning. On his first day in office, he pledged to modernize and strengthen Bangladesh’s counterterrorism operations.
Karim met two international delegations on the day of his appointment. At noon, he held talks with a French delegation led by Lieutenant Colonel Christelle Fontaine, Deputy Homeland Security Attaché of the French Embassy in Dhaka. Both sides agreed to boost cooperation and enhance intelligence sharing to combat terrorism.
Later in the afternoon, Karim met a UK delegation led by Ms Sakina Alam, Deputy Head of the Counterterrorism Department at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. During the discussions, Bangladesh reiterated its “zero tolerance” policy against terrorism, while both parties agreed to maintain intelligence sharing and strengthen mutual collaboration.
A 15th batch BCS Police cadre officer, Rezaul Karim began his career in 1995. Over his long career, he served in Bogura, Lalmonirhat, Khagrachhari, Chandpur, Rajbari, Chapainawabganj, Natore, and Jhenaidah districts, as well as in KMP, Highway Police, CID, SB, PTC Noakhali, RRF Dhaka, and ATU. Most recently, he served as the Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
Known for integrity and professionalism, Karim received the PPM medal and twice earned the IGP badge. He completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Applied Physics and Electronics from the University of Dhaka and received professional training in Bangladesh, the United States, and Australia. He also served with distinction in UN peacekeeping missions in Liberia and East Timor.
