BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused Jamaat-e-Islami of repeatedly attempting to stab the party in the back whenever given the chance, during a speech in Dhaka on Monday.
In a sharp attack, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), accused Jamaat-e-Islami of continuously undermining the party by betraying it whenever possible. Speaking at a program held in front of BNP’s central office in Paltan, Dhaka, he highlighted the history of Jamaat’s opportunistic behavior, particularly during moments when the BNP was vulnerable.
Rizvi recalled how Jamaat had tried to discredit the late President Ziaur Rahman, calling him the founder of a “king’s party,” and criticized the Jamaat for undermining the principles of democracy. He praised Ziaur Rahman’s liberal approach, which allowed many political groups, including Jamaat, to re-enter politics after being banned post-1971.
He further condemned the government for neglecting the sacrifices of workers involved in the July protests, particularly the rickshaw pullers and van drivers whose livelihoods were endangered. Rizvi pointed out that the government has not taken any steps to rehabilitate these workers, who died during the protests, and accused the ruling party of focusing solely on power-sharing and attacking BNP with baseless allegations.
Rizvi also addressed a recent press conference by Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, Chhatra Shibir, and compared it to the now-defunct student organization, Chhatra League. He questioned the credibility of Jamaat, calling it a “hidden camp” and emphasizing that many former leaders of Chhatra Shibir have found positions in other political parties, including the Chhatra League.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that the program was attended by several BNP leaders, including Abdus Salam, a member of the party’s advisory council.
