BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has strongly denied allegations that the party was involved in the recent brutal murder of scrap trader Sohag near Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, calling such claims politically motivated and misleading.
“Where is the BNP’s involvement in that incident?” Rizvi questioned while addressing a ‘Free Medical Camp’ organised by BNP’s Dhaka North City unit on Friday (12 July).
Rizvi confirmed that the party had expelled those involved, saying, “BNP or its affiliated organisation’s members found linked to the incident have been expelled for life as of last night.”
He stressed that BNP does not tolerate criminal activity, stating, “BNP is a large political family. Sometimes wrongdoers may sneak in, but once identified, the party takes immediate disciplinary action.”
Rizvi also said he personally contacted the administration, urging legal action regardless of the individual’s political background. “No matter how powerful they are, file a case and arrest them. BNP will never defend any criminal.”
He criticized the Dhaka Metropolitan Police for not taking quicker action. “Or do you want such incidents to continue so that you can blame BNP?” he asked.
Rizvi further emphasized that BNP stands for justice and good governance, reflecting on the legacy of the party’s founder Ziaur Rahman. “He never spared criminals. BNP still follows those principles,” he said.
“There is no place in BNP for those involved in violence or killings. Criminals don’t have a political identity — they act for personal gain,” Rizvi added.
He warned that blaming BNP for isolated criminal acts committed by individuals will not benefit other political parties. “We know their history, and the public hasn’t forgotten either.”
“BNP is not a party of violence. It is a party working for peace, order, and justice across Bangladesh,” Rizvi concluded.
