BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that the current interim government shares similarities with Sheikh Hasina’s regime, particularly in terms of election manipulation and authoritarian behavior.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday after visiting injured party activist Rakibul Hasan in Khilkhet, Rizvi said, “The people have been deprived of a free and fair election for 15 years, and that deprivation continues under the current interim government. Their behavior over the election reminds me of the Hasina era.”
Rakibul Hasan, an electrician and activist of the BNP’s volunteer wing, was injured during the July 18 public uprising at Dhaka’s ECB Square against what Rizvi termed the “fascist Hasina regime.”
Rizvi demanded proper investigation and justice for the incidents in July, warning that mass arrests and indiscriminate lawsuits, as practiced by the Awami League, would only deepen public resentment. “Why have the assailants of Abu Sayeed, Mughda, and Wasim not been arrested yet? Their identities are public, and yet the interim government has failed to bring them to justice,” he said.
He further criticized the government’s budget allocations, particularly cuts in the health and education sectors. “Thousands of students shed blood for the nation’s freedom. If the health sector was functional, why are injured activists still forced to seek treatment abroad?”
On political appointments, Rizvi alleged that individuals with no role in democratic movements were made advisors, some of whom had even mocked democracy activists in the past.
He also condemned the government’s refusal to allow Ishraq Hossain to assume office despite a court ruling in his favor. “Why is Ishraq being blocked from becoming mayor while Dr. Shahadat in Chattogram was allowed? This is pure abuse of power,” he said.
The event was chaired by journalist Atikur Rahman Rumon, convener of ‘Amra BNP Poribar’, and attended by advisors Engineer Ashraf Uddin Bakul, Md. Abul Kashem, Engineer Mostafa-e-Zaman Selim, Member Secretary Agriculturist Moksedul Momin Mithun, and members Masud Rana Liton, Mustakim Billah, Farhad Ali Sojib, and Shahadat Hossain.
