BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has criticized the newly-formed National Citizen Party (NCP) for lacking a clear political philosophy, despite their positive remarks about the state during their inaugural event.
While attending a discussion on the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, organized by the Nationalist Research Foundation (NRF) on Saturday (March 1) in Dhaka, Rizvi expressed his concerns over the political ideology of the National Citizen Party (NCP). He stated that although NCP leaders spoke well about the state, they failed to present a political philosophy.
Rizvi added that many intellectuals had recently attempted to connect the formation of BNP with past leaders such as Ziaur Rahman and Hussain Muhammad Ershad. However, he emphasized that Ziaur Rahman introduced a new political vision by establishing multi-party democracy in Bangladesh, a contribution that, according to Rizvi, set BNP apart from other political parties in the country.
He praised Ziaur Rahman for bringing democracy to the nation, contrasting it with the autocratic rule of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the subsequent establishment of one-party rule through the Baksal. Rizvi highlighted that Zia was not a dictator who overthrew a democratic leader but a democrat who gave birth to multi-party democracy in Bangladesh.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that Rizvi also expressed appreciation for BNP’s contribution to democracy and human rights, referring to the sacrifices made by party leaders, including Begum Khaleda Zia, in their struggles for democracy, especially during the 1990s and beyond.
