Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Saturday (15 June) emphasised the need to promote bamboo as a sustainable alternative to timber in furniture production, citing growing pressure on forest resources.

Speaking at a post-Eid greetings event at the Ministry of Environment, Rizwana said, “To ease the burden on timber, bamboo must be encouraged. It is fast-growing, widely available, and environment-friendly.”

She instructed the Bangladesh Forest Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC) to take steps to boost bamboo furniture production, and also called for improved bamboo processing technologies through the Bamboo Research Centre.

“Modern, durable, and aesthetic bamboo furniture can meet local demand and create opportunities in global markets,” she noted.

The event was attended by Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed, additional secretaries, and senior officials of the ministry.
