A violent robbery took place aboard a moving passenger bus in Savar, where robbers looted gold jewelry, cash, and other valuables worth several lakhs from the passengers, marking the third such incident in recent times.

In a horrifying incident on Friday night, a bus operated by Itihas Paribahan was robbed on the Dhaka-Aricha highway near Rajfulbariya Hemayetpur road. As the bus approached the Karnapara bridge, several armed robbers aboard the bus held the passengers hostage, forcefully seizing their cash, mobile phones, gold ornaments, and other valuables. The robbers then made their escape when the bus stopped in the Rajfulbariya area of Savar’s Tetuljhora Union.

One of the passengers, Suman Sarkar, recalled that while traveling from Chandrapur, the robbers boarded the bus and, using sharp knives and local weapons, intimidated the passengers. “They took 35,000 taka from me,” he said.

Other passengers reported that the robbers stole women’s gold chains, mobile phones, and other valuable items, filling two bags before fleeing the scene.

The bus driver, Rajab Ali, confirmed the robbery, stating that the robbers looted money and valuables at gunpoint before fleeing. After the robbers left, passengers reportedly damaged the bus in frustration, while the driver and his assistant, Emadul Haque, hid nearby.

Savar Circle Assistant Police Superintendent Shahinur Kabir confirmed that an armed robbery complaint had been filed. “We have begun investigating the matter and are hopeful of arresting the culprits soon,” he said.

Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that despite a night-long search operation, authorities have yet to arrest any of the robbers or recover the stolen goods.
