The High Court has commuted the death sentences of two convicts in the 2001 Romna Batamul bombing to life imprisonment, while sentencing the remaining nine to 10 years in prison each, along with financial penalties.

On Tuesday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter delivered the long-awaited verdict in the Romna Batamul blast case, nearly 23 years after the deadly attack on the Bengali New Year celebration organized by Chhayanaut.

The two men previously sentenced to death—Maulana Taj Uddin and Jewel—will now serve life in prison. The nine other convicts had their sentences reduced to 10 years each, along with fines of Tk 50,000.

The bombing occurred on April 14, 2001, at Dhaka’s Romna Batamul, killing nine people on the spot and injuring dozens. One more victim later died in hospital. Sergeant Amal Chandra Chanda of the Nilkhet police outpost filed two cases—one for murder and another under the Explosives Act—at Ramna Police Station on the same day.

Following years of trial proceedings, a lower court delivered the initial verdict on June 23, 2014, sentencing several of the accused to death. The High Court later heard the death reference, jail appeals, and criminal appeals, culminating in the current judgment.
