Anik Khan, Dhaka: Businessman Abu Taleb Rubel, once an active participant in the anti-autocracy movement, has now found himself entangled in a questionable legal case. For the past nine months, Rubel has been in jail, accused in a murder case that his family insists is the result of a “lawsuit trade.”
Rubel’s wife, Nurunnahar Runu, stated that on July 18, 2024, Rubel was in his hometown of Shahrasti in Cumilla, attending his younger brother’s wedding ceremony following his return from South Africa. However, the very next day, on July 19, Rubel was named in a murder case related to a brawl that occurred in Dhaka’s Rampura area.
Surprisingly, the case was not filed by the deceased’s family but by a neighbor named Masud Rana. The complaint alleged that Hasib Ahasan, injured in the incident on July 19, died on July 22 while undergoing treatment. Yet, Rubel’s family and local residents confirm that he was outside Dhaka during the incident.
According to Rampura Police Station case number 4, dated 3/9/24 (GR 158/24), Rubel was arrested on the evening of November 1 from his shop in Malibagh Bazaar.
Shockingly, Masud Rana, the plaintiff in the case, later admitted, “I don’t know Rubel, never seen him. I have no idea how his name ended up in the case.”
Rubel’s wife claims that some local individuals influenced the plaintiff with financial incentives due to a business rivalry and got Rubel falsely implicated in the murder case.
Among Rubel’s three children, his eldest daughter, Sania Taleb Supti, is an HSC candidate at Cumilla Women’s College. The family has been struggling severely in Rubel’s absence for the last nine months. Unable to pay rent, they lost their shop and had to vacate their home.
In this dire situation, their only support has been Rubel’s uncle, BNP central committee leader Zakir Patwari, who has been helping the family survive in Cumilla.
Through the media, Rubel’s family has appealed to the government for a fair and impartial investigation into the “fabricated case” and urged authorities to grant Rubel bail and allow him to return home to support his family.
