The Shibir-backed United Students’ Alliance panel has won 20 out of 23 posts, including Vice-President (VP), in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election.
Independent and alternative panel candidates secured the remaining three positions, including the crucial General Secretary (GS) post.
The results were officially announced by the RUCSU Election Commission at 8:30am on Friday (17 October) at the university’s Kazi Nazrul Auditorium.
Mostakur Rahman Zahid, the VP candidate from the Shibir-backed panel, was elected with 12,687 votes. His closest rival, Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir of the BNP-affiliated ‘United New Generation’ panel, received 3,397 votes.
In a major upset, independent candidate Salauddin Ammar won the GS post with a large margin, securing 11,497 votes. His closest competitor, Fazle Rabbi Md Fahim Reza from the Shibir-backed panel, received 5,727 votes.
Among the other two non-Shibir victories, Nargis Akter was elected Sports Secretary, and Tofayel Ahmed Toha won the Science Affairs Secretary post.
This year’s election marks the first RUCSU polls in 35 years, drawing widespread attention from students and political groups on campus. The overwhelming victory of the Shibir-backed panel is seen as a decisive shift in student politics at Rajshahi University.
