RUCSU polls scheduled on 15 September

The long-awaited Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) election will be held on 15 September, as per the official schedule announced by the RUCSU Election Commission on Monday.

The announcement was made by Election Commissioner Professor Enamul Haque at a press briefing held at the Senate Building of the university.

According to the declared timetable, the code of conduct will be published on 31 July. A draft voter list is set to be released on 6 August. After reviewing objections over data, the final voter list will be published on 14 August.

Nomination forms will be distributed from 17 to 19 August, and submissions will be accepted on 21, 24, and 25 August. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on 27–28 August. The preliminary list of candidates will be released on 31 August, with withdrawal deadline set on 2 September.

The final list of candidates will be published on 4 September. Voting will be held on 15 September in all residential halls, followed by vote counting and the declaration of results.

In his welcome address, Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Amzad Hossain said, “The RUCSU, hall unions, and student representation in the Senate election of 2025 mark a significant step toward restoring the democratic tradition of the university and fostering student leadership. After nearly three and a half decades, we are turning a historic page with this much-anticipated schedule announcement. The Election Commission is committed to holding a free, fair, and participatory election.”

When asked about law and order, he said, “The university administration is in constant communication with law enforcement agencies and all other relevant bodies. We are confident, Insha’Allah, that no untoward incident will occur from the start of the election process to the announcement of results.”

Present at the event were RUCSU Treasurer Professor Dr Setaur Rahman, Election Commissioner and Syndicate Member Professor Dr Nizam Uddin, other members of the Election Commission, Public Relations Administrator Professor Akhtar Hossain Majumder, Proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman, and provosts from various halls.

In an immediate reaction following the schedule announcement, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Saleh Hasan Naqib said, “Better late than never. We will need everyone’s cooperation. I hope that after over three decades, the university will see vibrant student leadership through a successful and meaningful election.”
