Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has been handed a six-match suspension by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) following his unsportsmanlike conduct toward the referee during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.

The dramatic Copa del Rey final on April 27 saw Barcelona edge past Real Madrid with a 3-2 victory at Estadio de La Cartuja. In the 123rd minute of extra time, tensions escalated when referee decisions sparked outrage from Los Blancos’ center-back Antonio Rüdiger.

The German international, angered by a foul call against Kylian Mbappé, reportedly hurled an object—later identified by multiple media outlets as an ice cube—from the bench toward the referee. The Spanish Football Federation has labeled the act as “minor violence” against the match official.

While the suspension might appear significant, it is unlikely to impact Real Madrid’s squad depth. Rüdiger recently underwent knee surgery and is currently in rehabilitation. As a result, the ban is expected to coincide with his recovery period.

The incident has reignited conversations around player conduct during high-stakes fixtures, as well as the disciplinary measures taken to maintain respect for referees on the field.
