Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government has announced that Russia has become the first country to officially recognise its administration, a move hailed by Afghan officials as a “brave decision” that could pave the way for broader international engagement.
The statement came after a meeting in Kabul between Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Russia’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhirnov. “Russia is the first country which has officially recognised the Islamic Emirate,” said Zia Ahmad Takal, spokesperson for the Taliban’s foreign ministry.
Calling it the beginning of “a new phase of positive relations,” Muttaqi said on social media platform X that Russia’s decision could serve as an example for other countries. “Now that the process of recognition has started, Russia was ahead of everyone,” he added.
The Russian foreign ministry also confirmed the recognition, stating it would help enhance bilateral cooperation in sectors such as energy, transportation, agriculture, and infrastructure. Moscow emphasized the importance of supporting Kabul in maintaining regional security and combating terrorism and drug trafficking.
This marks a significant development in Afghanistan’s diplomatic landscape. Despite the Taliban returning to power in 2021, no country had officially recognised their government until now. Russia, which fought a decade-long war in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989, has steadily built ties with the Taliban authorities, including removing them from its list of terrorist organisations earlier this year.
In recent months, Moscow has accepted a Taliban-appointed ambassador and opened a business office in Kabul, positioning Afghanistan as a potential energy transit corridor for gas headed to Southeast Asia.
