The world is just “millimeters away from disaster” due to the risk of nuclear escalation in the Middle East, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned on Wednesday.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Zakharova criticised global media silence over recent Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. “It is really surprising that the world’s mainstream and Western media, which usually focus on human rights and environmental issues, are silent now. Apparently, the strategic white noise has been switched on again,” she said.
Zakharova pointed out that the facilities targeted in Iran were verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as being for peaceful purposes. “Attacks on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure are extremely dangerous,” she said, cautioning that such actions could spark a global catastrophe.
On 13 June, Israel launched a large-scale offensive called Operation Rising Lion, striking several targets linked to Iran’s nuclear programme and killing multiple senior military officials and scientists. Iran responded with Operation True Promise 3, hitting military sites inside Israel later the same day.
The comments were made as the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum opened under the theme “Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World.”
