Waves of Russian drones and missiles struck Kyiv early Tuesday, injuring at least 16 people and damaging multiple buildings, city officials reported. The attacks triggered fires and power outages across several districts, prompting an extended air raid alert over the capital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed most of the injuries occurred in the Solomianskyi district, where a drone struck the top floor of an apartment building. Fires broke out in various parts of the city, with emergency services responding across five affected districts.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the capital’s military administration, described the assault as a “combined attack” involving both missiles and drones. A kindergarten in eastern Kyiv was also targeted, he added.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, condemned the strikes, accusing Russia of continuing its war against civilians. The attacks come amid ongoing direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, which have yielded limited progress beyond agreements on prisoner exchanges and repatriation of fallen soldiers.
Klitschko also reported the death of a 62-year-old U.S. citizen during the strikes, though further details remain unclear.
Meanwhile, Moscow’s mayor said Russian air defences intercepted two Ukrainian drones aimed at the capital. The brief attack led to temporary closures of Moscow’s airports.
