The 6th edition of the Sustainable Apparel Forum (SAF) 2025 concluded today in Dhaka, marking a significant step towards positioning Bangladesh as a global leader in sustainable sourcing and responsible practices within the apparel industry. The event, organized by Bangladesh Apparel Exchange (BAE) in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, provided a dynamic platform for dialogue on critical issues such as climate change, environmental conservation, and decent work.
With over 550 delegates from around the world, the forum facilitated engaging discussions that explored the future of sustainable practices in the apparel sector. The event featured an opening ceremony, four informative panel discussions, five presentations, and two breakout sessions. More than 40 renowned international speakers, along with over 20 innovators, shared their expertise, reinforcing the importance of sustainability in shaping the future of the industry.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forests, Climate Change, and Water Resources, emphasized the collective responsibility of stakeholders in ensuring sustainability. “Sustainability is a shared responsibility. I hope importers and exporters will come together to work towards sustainable practices,” she said. She also called for a transition to renewable energy and sustainable practices across the business community.
H.E. Michael Miller, Ambassador of the European Union to Bangladesh, highlighted the evolving partnership between Bangladesh and the EU, particularly in the area of renewable energy. “The EU has benefitted from high-quality products imported from Bangladesh, and we are committed to supporting Bangladesh in ensuring it is equipped to offer opportunities for sustainable development,” he stated.
H.E. Andre Carstens, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, reiterated the Netherlands’ commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s sustainable efforts. “We strongly support the mission to raise awareness, standardize sustainability goals, and enhance circularity. Collaboration is key to implementing sustainable solutions that will help Bangladesh solidify its position as a responsible sourcing hub,” he said.
Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), emphasized the nation’s ambition to lead in sustainable apparel by 2040. “Let’s work together to identify quick wins and accelerate our progress towards sustainability,” he urged.
Mostafiz Uddin, Founder & CEO of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange, reflected on the forum’s role in fostering collaboration. “Our efforts are creating opportunities and driving business integration, and I believe these initiatives will continue to drive impactful change towards a sustainable future,” he affirmed.
In addition, the Netherlands Circular Textile Trade mission is being held from 10th to 13th February, bringing 18 Dutch companies specializing in circularity and renewable energy to Bangladesh. The mission, supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), and various local organizations, has provided valuable networking opportunities and furthered the push for sustainability within the apparel industry.
The success of SAF 2025 marks another milestone in Bangladesh’s journey to becoming a leading hub for sustainable fashion and responsible sourcing. The forum’s collaborative spirit and commitment to sustainability continue to shape a greener future for the global apparel industry.
