The investigation report on the high-profile murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi has been delayed once again, marking the 116th postponement of the report’s submission.

On Sunday, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the agency handling the case, failed to submit the investigation report to the court. As a result, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M.A. Azharul Islam set a new date for the report submission.

The case dates back to February 11, 2012, when the journalist couple was murdered in their rented apartment in West Rajabazar, Dhaka. At the time of the incident, their 4.5-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh, was present in the house. Sagar worked for private television channel Maasranga, while Runi was employed at ATN Bangla. Runi’s brother, Nowsher Alam, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.

The accused in the case include Rofiqul Islam, Bakul Mia, Masum Mintu, Kamrul Islam (alias Arun), Abu Saeed, and two security guards of the house, Palash Rudra Pal and Enayet Ahmed, along with their friend Tanvir Rahman Khan. Of these, Tanvir and Palash are out on bail, while the others remain in prison.

Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that in response to the prolonged investigation, the Ministry of Home Affairs formed a four-member task force on October 23, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government after a student uprising on August 5. The task force is headed by Mohammad Towfiq Mahbub Chowdhury, an Additional Inspector General of Police and the head of PBI.
