Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer (North region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has posted a detailed account on Facebook about a viral video involving a scuffle outside North South University (NSU) in Bashundhara Residential Area, Dhaka.
On Thursday night, around 3 AM, Sarjis Alam shared a Facebook post describing the incident that took place near North South University (NSU), where a viral video showed a confrontation involving shouting and commotion. According to his post, Sarjis visited the area to have a casual tea session with fellow students from various private universities, including NSU, IUB, AIUB, and UIU.
Sarjis wrote, “After Iftar, I went to have tea with friends from these universities and listen to their stories. From 7 PM to 10 PM, I enjoyed tea and conversation with them. Afterward, while walking in front of NSU with around 15-20 students, I saw 10-12 students from Dhaka University (DU) shouting slogans in front of the NSU gate, including Central Leader Ahmed Shakil from the student wing of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP).”
He continued, “When I approached to listen to them, they started insulting my private university companions. Among the 10-12 individuals, a few seemed like students, but the others appeared to be hired goons or troublemakers. Realizing their intention to create a disruptive situation, I asked both groups to disperse and left the scene.”
According to Sarjis, after leaving the area, the student leader Ahmed Shakil and his followers attacked the private university students with sharp weapons, causing multiple injuries. He stated that the attackers wounded several individuals, leaving them bloodied.
In his post, Sarjis demanded the immediate arrest of Shakil and the other attackers, stating, “The culprits must be brought to justice quickly.”
Sarjis further criticized the behavior of some student leaders, saying, “After 16 years of suffering under the Student League’s goons, if students behave like the thugs of the ‘Tokai League,’ it won’t take long for them to face the same fate.”
Liberty News’ politics correspondent however states that the incident had nothing to do with politics. Rather, it was an outburst of the attack on private university students at DU a few days back. Our correspondent also stated that a member of Sarjis’ entourage started the aggressive behaviour towards the agitated NSU-IUB-AIUB students and that led to the altercation.
