The Supreme Court has begun hearing appeals filed against the High Court verdict that acquitted BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar, and others in the August 21 grenade attack cases.

A full Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, opened the hearing this morning, with defence lawyer SM Shahjahan presenting arguments.

Also present in court were defence counsels AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Kayser Kamal, and Mohammad Shishir Manir, along with Additional Attorney Generals Md Arshadur Rauf and Aneek R Haque.

On June 2, the Appellate Division had allowed the state to proceed with two appeals challenging the High Court’s December 1, 2023 decision, which acquitted all 49 accused in the grenade attack cases, including Tarique and Babar.

The HC ruling had overturned the lower court’s previous conviction and sentencing of the accused. Following this, the state moved the apex court, seeking reversal of the acquittal.
