Jessore residents are enduring extreme heat as the temperature soars to a record 39.4°C on March 29, marking the highest of the season.

Jessore is facing an intense heatwave, with the temperature reaching 39.4°C on the afternoon of Saturday, March 29, the highest recorded so far this season. The meteorological office at Birshreshtha Matiur Rahman Airbase confirmed the data.

On Friday, the highest temperature recorded in the country was also in Jessore at 41°C, and Thursday saw a temperature of 37.6°C.

For the past three days, people across all walks of life have been suffering from the sweltering heat. Shoppers coming out for their Eid purchases are particularly struggling with the oppressive heat. Rickshaw pullers have been facing the most hardship, as they have no respite from the scorching sun due to the demands of their livelihood. The intense heat has also resulted in reduced earnings for them, further adding to their discomfort. Even animals are feeling the harsh effects of the relentless heat.

The weather office has predicted that the heatwave will persist for the next few days, with moderate to intense heat continuing to cause discomfort. People are avoiding going out, except for urgent needs. Those who do venture outside are often seen carrying umbrellas or using rickshaws, though their numbers are few.

Habibur Rahman, a lawyer from Darratana, said, “The heatwave has been unbearable for the past two days. The scorching sun is burning everything. With Eid approaching, I had no choice but to come to the market. I’m exhausted from the heat.”

Tawibur, a rickshaw puller, expressed, “It feels like fire is flying around. It’s difficult to work in this heat. I have to be out for my livelihood, but the scorching heat is unbearable, and the hot pavement makes it feel like my face is burning.”

According to the weather office, Jessore’s temperature reached a record high of 43.8°C on June 30 last year.
