Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has warned that any “secret understanding” between the government and a political party could undermine the level playing field for the upcoming national elections.

In a statement sent to the media on Sunday, Parwar alleged that the government might scrap the latest amendment to the Representation of the People Order (RPO) following a secret deal, allowing registered party candidates to contest under the election symbols of their alliance partners.

The Jamaat leader’s comments came amid reports that the interim government’s Advisory Council had recently approved an amendment to the RPO on 23 October, requiring all candidates— even those within an electoral alliance— to contest under their own party’s symbol.

Opposition parties, including the BNP, had expressed strong objections to this provision, arguing that it was “unacceptable” and would complicate alliance-based election strategies.

Citing “various sources,” Parwar claimed that the government may now reverse its own decision “in response to a so-called ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between a BNP leader and an adviser.”

“If the approved RPO amendment is revoked, it would be a shameful, undemocratic, and politically motivated act,” he said, adding, “Such a move, under the guise of a secret deal, would raise serious questions about the neutrality of the upcoming national election and the credibility of the level playing field.”

He further warned that if the government and any member of the Advisory Council engage in such collusion just four months before the election, ensuring a free and fair electoral environment would become “virtually impossible.”
