Sunamganj : Section 144 imposed in Madhya Nagar

The Upazila administration has imposed Section 144, prohibiting all meetings, processions, gatherings indefinitely in the Madhya Nagar market of Sunamganj. This action was taken following clashes between two parties, and the vandalism of party offices, which occurred during the police’s attempt to arrest a suspect.

On Friday, February 21, the Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate, Ujjal Roy, issued a notice declaring the imposition of Section 144 in the area from 6:00 PM.

According to police and local residents, the incident occurred on Friday evening when supporters of Abdul Kayum Majnu, the former general secretary of the Madhya Nagar Upazila BNP and Jubo Dal leader Shahid Mia clashed over the arrest of a suspect. During the altercation, temporary offices of both BNP and Jubo Dal were vandalized. Since then, there has been heightened tension between the two groups in the Madhya Nagar market area. To prevent potential bloodshed , ensure the safety of the public, the administration has prohibited gatherings, meetings, processions in the market ,surrounding areas until further notice.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Madhya Nagar Police Station, Sajib Rahman, told Liberty News that clashes occurred between the supporters of Shahid Mia, Jubo Dal leader, and Abdul Kayum Majnu, the former general secretary of the BNP, over the police’s attempt to arrest a suspect. Following the clashes, both parties vandalized BNP and Jubo Dal offices. This spread panic among local traders, residents. To restore law & order in the market andsurrounding areas, the Upazila administration imposed Section 144. To prevent further chaos, police patrols have been increased in the area. The police will remain deployed in the market, nearby areas until further instructions are given. The situation is now under control.
