The district administration has imposed Section 144 in Khagrachhari Municipality and Sadar Upazila over fears of deteriorating law and order. The order was issued on Saturday afternoon through a notice signed by Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate ABM Iftekharul Islam Khondokar.
According to the notice, the restriction will remain in force from 2 PM on Saturday until further instructions. Authorities said the decision was taken to protect lives and property and to maintain overall peace and order. The public has also been warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who violates the order.
Administrative sources said tensions rose and the risk of violence increased during a dawn-to-dusk blockade enforced under the banner of “Jumma Students and Citizens” in protest of the rape of a schoolgirl. During the protest, two vehicles were vandalized in the Alutila and Swanirbhar areas. Security has since been tightened in the town to keep the situation under control.
The incident that sparked the protests took place last Tuesday, when a schoolgirl was reportedly raped in the Singinala area while returning home from private tutoring. In response, demonstrators announced a blockade beginning on Friday.
