Students of the seven government colleges in Dhaka have announced a fresh blockade for Monday as part of their intensified movement demanding the immediate issuance of the final ordinance for the proposed Dhaka Central University.

On Sunday, the students blocked several major roads in the capital from the morning, lifting the obstruction later in the day to ease public suffering. They, however, declared that the movement would continue until the ordinance is formally issued.

Many students continued their protest into the night, staging a sit-in outside the Education Ministry.

The protesters allege that despite repeatedly raising their demands, the ministry has made no visible progress, leaving more than 150,000 students facing an identity crisis and academic uncertainty. They say they will continue with road blockades, sit-ins and siege programmes in the coming days.

Although the Education Ministry has published the draft law for the proposed university, work on the final ordinance has remained stalled for months.

Students say this delay is causing confusion over institutional identity, disrupting academic activities and jeopardising future career prospects. To avoid public inconvenience, they have been holding demonstrations near the Education Building.

On 12 November, the ministry announced a policy decision to merge the seven colleges to establish a new public university named Dhaka Central University, formally ending their long-standing affiliation with the University of Dhaka.
