Shanto hits tons in both innings twice

Liberty News Desk

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has made history by becoming the first player from his country to score centuries in both innings of a Test match twice.

The 25-year-old reached the rare feat during the fifth day of the first Test against Sri Lanka, following up his first-innings 148 with an unbeaten 125 in the second. He had previously recorded the same milestone against Afghanistan in 2023, when he scored 146 and 124.

Shanto now joins an elite list of just 14 batters in world cricket history to achieve twin Test centuries on multiple occasions. Cricketing legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Ricky Ponting and David Warner have done it three times, while the likes of Rahul Dravid, Greg Chappell and Kumar Sangakkara are also part of the prestigious group.

Before Shanto, Mominul Haque was the only other Bangladeshi batter to achieve centuries in both innings of a Test — 176 and 105 against the same Afghan side in Chattogram in 2018.

Shanto’s remarkable consistency further solidifies his position as Bangladesh’s leading red-ball batter and sets a new benchmark for future generations.
