Former Bagerhat-1 MP Sheikh Helal Uddin and his son, ex-Bagerhat-2 lawmaker Sheikh Sarhan Naser Tonmoy, have been named in a criminal case involving allegations of extorting Tk 200 crore from a real estate businessman. The case, filed by Abdul Mannan Talukder—Managing Director of New Bashundhara Real Estate—also names three associates of the former lawmakers.
The accused include Sheikh Helal’s aide Md Firozul Islam, Tonmoy’s assistant MH Shaheen, and Sheikh Shahidul Islam. Bagerhat police confirmed that Shahidul Islam, 37, was arrested on Monday, while efforts to detain the others are ongoing.
According to the case details, on November 15, 2018, the five accused allegedly entered Mannan’s office in Bagerhat and demanded a staggering Tk 200 crore. Mannan claims they threatened to ruin his business, implicate him in fabricated legal charges, and even kill him if he refused to comply. Out of fear, he said he paid Tk 7.3 crore from client deposits that very night.
The intimidation reportedly continued, with another visit on January 3, 2019, during which Mannan alleges he was forced to pay an additional Tk 12.7 crore. In total, the accused are alleged to have extorted Tk 20 crore in cash across two encounters.
Bagerhat Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Mahamudul Hasan confirmed the case was filed on Monday and stated that law enforcement is actively working to apprehend the remaining suspects.
