Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir President Zahidul Islam has stated that the Chhatra League, despite being banned, has set a dangerous precedent, and unfortunately, the student organization, Chhatra Dal, is following its footsteps.

Zahidul Islam, in a press conference on February 23 at Dhaka University’s Madhur Cantine, criticized the growing influence of dominant student organizations involved in violence, extortion, and other illegal activities. He emphasized the disturbing similarities between the banned Chhatra League and current practices within the Chhatra Dal. He also expressed concern over the growing political apathy among students and the deteriorating academic environment due to these toxic student activities.

He described the oppressive behavior of some student organizations toward others, particularly the unjust blame placed on Shibir for violence carried out by other factions, stating that such actions echo those of the Student League during its banned period. He called for a change in student politics and urged for a more peaceful and productive environment in universities.

Zahidul also raised alarms about rising extortion and criminal activities across the country, linking the recent violence against Shibir members and their involvement in clashes with Chhatra Dal. He demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those responsible for these attacks and other crimes, stressing the need for systemic change to bring an end to lawlessness.

Liberty News’ political correspondent states that the Shibir President also urged media to ensure factual reporting and demanded accountability for those involved in religious insults and communal violence.
