The students of Rabindra University blocked the Dhopakandi section of the Sirajganj Highway from 11:00 am on Sunday, halting traffic in both directions between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh and causing severe inconvenience to passengers and transport operators.

The blockade was part of an escalating protest against the government’s delay in approving the Development Project Proposal (DPP) for the university’s permanent campus. Students had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum after staging sit-ins, human chains, and previous highway blockades along the Dhaka–Pabna Highway since July 26. With no government action by the deadline, they resumed their demonstrations.

Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdur Rauf said authorities were informed in advance. “The blockade began at 10:55 am. We are managing the situation by redirecting traffic through the city,” he told reporters.

Established nine years ago, Rabindra University still operates from rented facilities. It currently offers programmes in Bangla, Sociology, Economics, Music, and Management, serving 1,200 students with 34 teachers, 54 officials, and 107 staff members.

In 2025, the university submitted a revised proposal seeking Tk 519.15 crore to build a permanent campus on 100 acres. The plan is now under policy-level review by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).

Students have warned they will intensify their movement if the project is not approved and implemented without further delay.
