Police in Manikganj have arrested six individuals, including several Chhatra League leaders, in connection with an arson attack on the house of renowned artist Manbendra Ghosh, allegedly linked to New Year’s artwork.
The arson incident occurred on the night of April 15, reportedly triggered by suspicions that the artist had created a mask resembling a “fascist figure” for Pahela Baishakh celebrations. Unidentified individuals set fire to Ghosh’s residence in Manikganj Sadar Upazila, causing significant damage.
On Wednesday, Manbendra Ghosh filed a case with the Sadar Police Station against unknown perpetrators. Following the complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested six suspects based on preliminary evidence and social media activity.
The detained individuals include Al-Amin alias Tamal (22), Finance Secretary of the local Chhatra League; Joint General Secretary Mainuddin Ahmed Pias (22); Chhatra League leaders Mim Maruf and Aminur Rahman (24); Babul Hossain (54), General Secretary of Ward 3 of the local Awami League; and Khan Mohammad Rafi alias Season (18), another Chhatra League activist.
OC SM Amanullah of Manikganj Sadar Police Station confirmed the arrests on Thursday morning. He revealed that Khan Mohammad Rafi posted a message on social media stating “Mission Complete” shortly after the attack, which raised suspicions and led to his detention.
“We believe Rafi holds key information regarding the incident. Interrogation is ongoing for all detainees, and we expect further details to emerge,” the officer said.
Liberty News’ correspondent states that the incident has sparked public outrage, with cultural activists and citizens demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the attack on freedom of expression.
