Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting of gold trader Anwar Hossain and the subsequent gold jewelry robbery in Dhaka’s Banshree area. The police have also recovered the stolen gold and illegal firearms.
In a significant breakthrough, six suspects were apprehended on Friday during a police operation following the shooting of gold trader Anwar Hossain on the night of February 23. The individuals were taken into custody, though their identities have not been disclosed, according to a brief statement from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Authorities have also recovered a substantial amount of stolen gold jewelry and illegal firearms during the arrests.
DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali is expected to provide further details in a press briefing scheduled for later today.
Anwar Hossain, aged 42, was attacked by a group of armed assailants on the night of February 23 while returning home from his gold shop in Banasree Block D. The assailants, arriving on three motorcycles, surrounded him and forcefully stole a large quantity of gold jewelry from him. He was shot by the robbers.
The victim was immediately rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors confirmed gunshot wounds and signs of assault on his body. Anwar later reported to the police that approximately 200 bhori (a traditional unit of weight) of gold jewelry had been taken from him during the robbery.
Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that a 32-second video clip of the robbery was widely circulated on social media, further alarming the public and prompting swift action from law enforcement. Authorities have vowed to continue their investigation into the matter and ensure that justice is served.
