Even today, a woman’s skin tone silently influences how she is judged in families, workplaces and social circles. Dark-skinned girls often face taunts and subtle humiliation, but actress Paoli Dam has risen above these biases and claimed her identity with strength. She shares that her parents were open-minded and never cared about her complexion, but living in a joint family meant she couldn’t always avoid comments. One of her aunts would worry about how Paoli would ever get married with such skin tone—ironically, the same aunt had herself chosen her husband in 1950 and was darker than Paoli.
From school to coaching centers to neighborhood spaces, Paoli constantly heard that dark skin was undesirable, which often made her question whether being fair was the only definition of beauty. A major turning point came during the shooting of the film Kaalbela, when director Goutam Ghose told her that her skin tone was stunning—perhaps the first time someone complimented her complexion. Yet, discrimination persisted in the film industry. She recalls that in the movie I Love You, she had to play the hero’s sister because she wasn’t fair enough to be cast as the heroine. Years later, in Sanjhbati, she acted as the love interest of the same hero, proving how perspectives were slowly shifting.
Paoli decided not to protest through arguments but through the characters she chose. She began taking on roles where her complexion became a source of strength, portraying strong, rebellious women and channeling her suppressed emotions through acting. Today, she observes that the industry is changing—new filmmakers are showcasing dark-skinned women as confident and desirable. Fairness creams have lost much of their appeal, the word “fair” is being discarded, and people now embrace skincare that suits their natural complexion. Paoli believes that gender equality and women’s financial independence are driving forces behind this positive change.
In her message to dark-skinned women, she urges them not to lose heart. She believes that dark skin holds a unique beauty, mystery and depth. She points to actress Rekha as a timeless example of this allure. Many call Paoli “mysterious,” and she says that if people already decide whether she represents Kali or Durga, the intrigue is gone. Her journey is more than personal—it is a quiet but powerful rebellion against colorism, built on self-confidence, resilience and fearless authenticity.
