A woman was violently dragged along a busy Dhaka street after snatchers in a private car grabbed her vanity bag, leaving her injured and sparking widespread outrage online.
In a shocking incident in the capital’s Siddheshwari area, a woman standing by the roadside was dragged several meters after snatchers in a speeding white private car attempted to steal her vanity bag. The incident occurred on Saturday morning in front of Greenland Tower and came to light after CCTV footage surfaced on Facebook on Sunday.
The video shows the woman, dressed in a sari and carrying a large trolley bag, standing near the road. Suddenly, a white private car slowed down beside her, and an individual leaned out of the car’s left window, snatching her vanity bag. The woman fell to the ground and was dragged several feet by the moving car as she clung to her belongings. Her trolley bag remained at the scene.
Nearby pedestrians rushed to help, with one securing the trolley bag and others assisting the injured woman. Within moments, the woman was seen showing injury marks on her elbow to bystanders.
When contacted, Abdullah Al Mamun, Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Ramna Division, confirmed seeing the video footage. “The victim has not yet filed any complaint, but we are working to identify the culprits,” he told the Liberty News.
