Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho has stepped down from his position as Chief Executive Officer of the July Shahid Smriti Foundation, citing a desire to focus on higher education.
At a press conference following a board meeting held on Thursday (May 8) at the state guest house Jamuna, Snigdho announced his resignation in the presence of interim government Chief Adviser and Foundation President, Professor Muhammad Yunus.
Although stepping down from the CEO role, Snigdh will continue serving as a member of the Foundation’s governing body. “I have no intention of entering politics,” he stated, clarifying that the decision was solely motivated by his academic aspirations.
The July Shahid Smriti Foundation was established on October 21 last year in response to the Student Against Discrimination movement. It was approved as a non-political, voluntary, and welfare-oriented private organization.
In the Foundation’s inaugural meeting, chaired by Professor Muhammad Yunus, Students Against Discrimination movement coordinator Sarjis Alam was appointed General Secretary, while Snigdho, brother of slain activist Mugdha, was appointed CEO.
The Foundation’s core mission is to support the families of those who were martyred during the July–August 2024 student-civil uprising. It provides financial and humanitarian aid, employment opportunities, and medical treatment to injured or disabled victims, along with assistance for family members of the deceased.
