After a month-long shortage, bottled soybean oil is now widely available in markets due to the government’s strict measures. While the crisis has not been fully resolved, supply has significantly increased over the past two days, relieving consumers.
A market survey across Dhaka, including Karwan Bazar, Naya Bazar, Hatirpool, and Mohammadpur, confirmed the increased availability of bottled soybean oil. Traders reported a sharp rise in supply, though some still face shortages of five-liter bottles.
Retailers and wholesalers cited artificial market manipulation by major suppliers as the root cause of the crisis. Despite higher imports, disruptions in supply chains and alleged hoarding led to severe scarcity.
According to import records, over 129,000 tons of soybean oil entered the country in the first week of Ramadan. However, weak market monitoring prevented consumers from benefiting. Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission noted that despite reduced import duties, supply remained inconsistent.
Following government warnings of strict action against hoarding, distribution improved. The Chittagong district administration, frustrated by prolonged shortages, threatened warehouse inspections, prompting a swift response from suppliers.
Consumer rights groups emphasized the need for stronger oversight to prevent future crises. Officials assured continued monitoring to ensure market stability.
