Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has officially referred to Israel as a “genocidal state” and confirmed the suspension of all commercial ties with the country.
For the first time, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has openly declared Israel a “genocidal state” and announced that Spain has cut off all trade relations with the country. His statement came on Wednesday during a parliamentary session in response to criticism from Catalan MP Gabriel Rufián.
“I want to be very clear, Mr. Rufián—we are no longer maintaining commercial relations with a genocidal state. There will be no trade with them,” Sánchez stated.
Although Spain had reportedly suspended trade ties with Israel earlier, this is the first time the government has publicly confirmed the move. Following the Prime Minister’s declaration, Israel’s Foreign Ministry summoned Spanish Ambassador Ana Solomon on Thursday and delivered a strong diplomatic protest.
The decision and the sharp rhetoric reflect growing international criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which many human rights organizations have labeled disproportionate and deadly.
