Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal is holding a mass rally at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital to mark May Day. The event was started around 2:00 pm on Thursday.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to deliver a virtual address as the chief guest. By noon, sramik leaders from the capital and nearby districts converged in front of the Nayapaltan office with processions, halting all vehicle traffic in the area.
Thousands of leaders, activists, and supporters of BNP filled the streets from Fakirapul to Kakrail intersection, transforming the rally into a massive gathering.
A stage was set up in front of the BNP office, adorned with a large red banner displaying images of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Chairperson Khaleda Zia, and Tarique Rahman, with the slogan, “May Day is calling, let’s end inequality.”
Before the rally began, Jatiotabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) artists, including Kanakchapa and Mousumi, performed music, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Sramik leaders arrived with colorful hats, T-shirts, banners, and drums, chanting slogans like “Unite the workers of the world, fight” and demanding immediate parliamentary elections.
On Wednesday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rahul Kabir Rizvi announced that the rally would highlight a 12-point demand.
The demands include immediate parliamentary elections, the trial of Sheikh Hasina, daycare centres in workplaces, reopening closed industries, establishing new industries, ending outsourcing, ensuring democratic trade union rights, prosecuting worker murders, stopping worker harassment, providing maternity protection, setting a 30,000-taka minimum wage, implementing a non-discriminatory pay scale, repealing oppressive laws, and reducing prices of essential goods.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, and other central and affiliate leaders attended the rally.
The rally, chaired by Sramik Dal President Anwar Hossain, included key figures like Sramik Dal Chief Coordinator Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Ahmed Azam Khan, and others.
