Protesters demanding a ban on the Awami League gathered outside the interim government chief adviser’s residence Jamuna, with a large rally planned after Juma prayers led by the National Citizens’ Party (NCP).
The protest calling for the banning of the Awami League entered its second day on Friday morning, as activists from multiple political and student organizations assembled outside the Jamuna residence. The National Citizens’ Party (NCP), spearheading the movement, began the sit-in on Thursday night under the leadership of its southern regional organizer Hasnat Abdullah.
As preparations for a post-Juma mega gathering progressed, a stage was being constructed near the eastern side of the Jamuna fountain. Hasnat urged people of all political affiliations to join the protest.
Throughout Thursday night, various political entities joined the demonstration. Around 1:00 AM, NCP’s convenor Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhter Hossain marched to Jamuna along with central leaders. Soon after, Hefazat-e-Islam members, AB Party activists, and central leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir joined in.
Chants such as “Ban Awami League,” “My brother is in the grave, the killer roams free,” and “One, two, three, four — Awami League no more” echoed from the crowd. In a short speech around 2:00 AM, Nahid Islam stated, “It was the interim government’s first responsibility to ban the Awami League. Nine months later, we’re back on the streets.”
Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, added, “We won’t give the interim any more time. Either the Awami League is banned, or we return as martyrs.”
By 8:00 AM Friday, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami joined the protest. Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, secretary of Dhaka South Jamaat, declared, “The student-youth community that empowered the interim government now demands the Awami League be banned. Before noon today, all political parties must be called to formally declare the ban.”
