Standard voice replaced by Advanced ChatGPT Voice

Liberty News Desk

OpenAI will retire the familiar “Standard” voice of ChatGPT on September 9, replacing it with the “Advanced” voice option, now simply called ChatGPT Voice. The Advanced mode, first rolled out to a limited group last year, combines speech input, response generation, and vocal output in real time, promising faster and more natural interactions.

The Standard voice, introduced in 2023, used a simpler process: user speech was transcribed, the GPT model generated a response, and it was read back in a neutral, synthetic tone. In contrast, the new Advanced voice integrates all steps continuously, but many users feel it lacks the warmth and depth of its predecessor. Criticisms include its “robotic” quality, rapid speech, paraphrasing of responses, and omission of small details, which some say make conversations feel disconnected.

“The Standard voice offered a natural, comforting cadence,” one Reddit user commented, while another described the old mode as soulful and engaging, calling the new voice less personal. However, some users praise the Advanced voice for its speed, realism, and fluid conversation style.

OpenAI has stated that further improvements are coming, and given past instances where user feedback prompted the return of older models, there is speculation that the Standard voice could eventually return.
