British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday called for renewed negotiations between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program, warning of a “real risk of escalation” in the Middle East if military action continues.
Speaking to reporters, Starmer stressed that diplomacy remains the best path to address concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment, which has been a key target in recent Israeli strikes.
“We are all very concerned about Iran’s nuclear program and fully support Israel’s right to self-defense,” Starmer said. “But the priority must be de-escalation.”
His remarks followed a report in The Spectator that UK Attorney General Richard Hermer had raised legal concerns over possible British involvement in the conflict, particularly through the joint UK-US airbase at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.
Starmer warned the situation could have far-reaching consequences similar to the Gaza conflict, including economic fallout and regional instability.
