BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday called for an end to the culture of enforced disappearances, emphasizing the state’s critical role in upholding human rights.

In a statement marking the International Week in Remembrance of Disappeared Persons, he highlighted the issue’s severity.

Rahman noted that between 2009 and March 2024, approximately 666 individuals were abducted by law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh.

He said that BNP estimates suggest the actual number of enforced disappearances is likely much higher.

Many victims remain missing, some bodies have been recovered, and others were reported arrested after prolonged periods, he added.

“This reflects the brutal misrule of the former Awami regime,” Rahman said, pointing out that the reported figures are based on accounts from victims’ families, many of whom were too afraid to come forward.

He further stated that no trace has been found of individuals abducted by law enforcement, even after 10-15 years. Opposition leaders, activists, and supporters have been the primary targets, alongside businessmen, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens, he noted.

Citing the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, Rahman stressed that abductions constitute a crime against human rights. “The culture of abductions must end to protect human rights,” he urged.
