Despite a bullish trend in the country’s stock markets on Saturday, total turnover declined as investors remained cautious ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

In a rare trading session aligned with the extended Eid-ul-Azha vacation schedule, both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) posted gains on Saturday (May 17), with most stocks seeing price increases. However, the overall market turnover fell compared to the previous trading day.

At the DSE, 277 companies recorded price gains, while 79 saw declines and 40 remained unchanged. The benchmark DSEX index gained 39 points, closing at 4,820. The DSES index rose 13 points to settle at 1,052, and the DS30 advanced by 18 points to end at 1,788.

Despite the positive market breadth and index performance, total turnover at the DSE stood at Tk 262.86 crore, down from Tk 296.84 crore on the previous trading day — a decrease of nearly Tk 37 crore.

Meanwhile, the CSE also ended on a positive note. The CASPI index rose by 4 points. Out of 158 companies that traded, 74 advanced, 57 declined, and 27 remained unchanged. Turnover on the CSE fell to Tk 9.19 crore, down from Tk 10.29 crore previously.

Market analysts attributed the lower trading volume to investor caution and low participation ahead of the holiday season, despite continued optimism over market recovery.
