Tariq Litu, Dhaka: A pedestrian who was severely injured after being attacked by stray dogs in the Mohammadpur area of the capital was promptly taken to the hospital and given treatment by leaders of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). The incident occurred on Monday evening (September 29). The injured man has been identified as Alamgir Hossain, 38. He was returning home after shopping from a local store when the attack took place.

Locals who witnessed the incident said several stray dogs suddenly pounced on Alamgir. Despite his attempts to escape, he sustained multiple bite wounds on his hands and legs. He collapsed on the ground, after which nearby residents rushed to his aid.

At that time, Dr. Russell Hossain, a JCD leader from a private medical and dental college, was nearby. He quickly stepped in with local residents and personally took Alamgir to the hospital. Dhaka Central International Medical College JCD President Dr. Mir Sohan and Universal Medical College JCD President Dr. Kazi Toukir Mahmud accompanied him.

Upon arrival at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, doctors administered first aid and provided rabies vaccinations along with emergency medication to prevent infection.

“We didn’t waste any time and took him straight to the hospital,” said Dr. Russell Hossain. “The quicker a rabies vaccine is administered after a dog bite, the lower the risk. We also arranged the medication so the burden doesn’t fall on the victim’s family.”

Alamgir’s brother, Md Selim, told reporters, “Right after the incident, we were in shock and didn’t know what to do. Without these young men, my brother’s condition could have worsened. They not only took him to the hospital but also bought the medication. We are grateful.”

Residents said the number of stray dogs in the Mohammadpur area has increased for quite some time. Pedestrians have been targeted late at night and early in the morning, and similar incidents have occurred before.

Following the attack, locals urged the city corporation to take immediate action. They said that controlling the dog population, administering vaccinations, and launching awareness campaigns could significantly reduce such incidents.
