A series of powerful earthquakes struck off the coast of Russia’s far eastern region on Sunday, triggering a tsunami warning, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The seismic sequence began with 5.0-magnitude and 6.7-magnitude tremors, which did not initially cause alarm. However, at 08:49 GMT, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck, prompting the USGS to issue a tsunami alert for parts of the Pacific.
According to the USGS, hazardous tsunami waves were forecast for some coastal areas. Waves between 30 centimeters and one meter (up to 3.3 feet) were expected to reach parts of the Russian coast, while waves under 30 centimeters were forecast for Japan and the U.S. state of Hawaii.
The epicenter of the major quake was located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
Following the main tremor, several aftershocks occurred, including another strong quake measured at 6.7 magnitude.
Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that waves up to 60 centimeters were expected in the Commander Islands area in the southwestern Bering Sea, while waves of 15 to 40 centimeters were likely to hit the Kamchatka Peninsula.
The Kamchatka region sits along the boundary where the Pacific and North American tectonic plates meet, making it a known seismic hotspot. Since 1900, the area has experienced seven major earthquakes of magnitude 8.3 or higher.
Tsunami alerts were issued as a precaution while local authorities monitored developments and advised residents to stay alert for further updates.
